Being a college student in general is very difficult, but being an OT student in Velez college is another level especially in the middle of a pandemic. It's not all bad though, there are also the good and amazing side of it. First year me would probably be a fan of Third year me, I could really see the difference in how I was and how I am now as a person. I think the experiences I had so far shaped me into a better person and a better OT. From being clueless to what occupational therapy is to now being able to explain to people when they ask me what it’s all about.
Although one of my experiences was still when I was a first year student, specifically when we had our center visits, it has inspired me to continue and although online class has become one of the reasons why this course became more difficult and unmotivating, our experiences in having actual patients in our fieldwork subject changes all that and every time the session ends, it feels great to have helped certain people and gives a sense of fulfillment. I am also thankful for the feedback that I would get from my practicals, demos, and revalidas because it’s where I get to learn my mistakes and know how to improve and I would always really try my best to apply it the next time. I have already experienced doing community programs many times and it’s already familiar to me and every experience I had was unforgettable and enjoyable and I have always wanted to help others, and through occupational therapy I would be able to do that and more.
As a CBH-R Worker
The component I belong to is the Education component originally with group 1 and then we were merged together with group 2. The general goal of the education component is to be able to implement programs that are able to educate the members of a certain community, specifically for our program we intended to educate the children of E-Hope on different strategies incorporated through play to help with symptom and condition management.
For planning the program, everyone was assigned different tasks for the worksheets given such as the data gathering and making surveys, which led to eventually creating the program we did. At first, it was kind of overwhelming and confusing especially with the different worksheets given but eventually we got the hang of it. Although it was a stressful experience because everything was done online and oftentimes communicating with everyone can be difficult we were all able to pull it off. We were able to make and complete the necessary tasks given to us and everyone was willing to help one another. It was interesting learning about the center assigned to us which was e-Hope and the parents and children through the meeting and surveys we made. It was also our very first stakeholder’s meeting and even though it wasn’t as good as what was expected I think we were still able to do good and we made sure to apply the feedback given to us when we were given a second chance.
One of the tasks I was assigned during the designing of the program to was analyzing the results of their surveys and encoding the answers of the participants during the stakeholder’s meeting. Afterwards we had to make a SWOT analysis and problem and objective tree. After that we also tried to think of what activities we could possibly let the participants do and then created the program plan. I was assigned specifically to do the work plan together with another member. The planning part of the program was really stressful but it was also fun preparing for it. It was great that everyone was able to communicate and brainstorm different ideas that we could do for our program because at first it was kind of difficult to think of specific activities but eventually after rechecking the analysis and data we had, the group came up with activities that can help both the parents and children with symptom and condition management and a collaboration with the livelihood component. One of the activities proposed was really cute and really fun, specifically the Play to cope, learn to hope activity, and it was nice that activity was chosen because it would help the children and we would get to interact with them. For the program planning also, it was fun making the Gantt chart and tables and filling in the information even though my groupmate and I were unsure about some parts of it. Overall the planning part eventually became fun and enjoyable together with everyone.
For the implementation of the program, I was assigned to lead and organize the group, it was my responsibility to help out the group and ensure there was constant communication and organization present all throughout. I was the one who printed out the needed papers and received the materials bought for our program. I was also assigned to the marketing committee together with some of the other members and I also volunteered to be one of the members who would go on site to the center and together with the other members who also volunteered, helped facilitate the program and assist the children in doing their activities.Honestly it was scary at first, because the responsibility of being the one to lead is quite difficult, it was sometimes overwhelming to have many people message and ask you questions and I had to disseminate other information to them as well but eventually I got the hang of it again. I had this subconscious fear that no one would take me seriously and I constantly thought someone better was fit for the job but I am thankful that they trusted me. Through the committee I was assigned to, we were also able to finalize the letters, forms, invitations, and announcements we had to give out. Hours before the program we shared the invitations to our instructors and our classmates as well. It was also great that I was able to have the opportunity to volunteer to go to the center, I had lots of fun and I learned so much from the program that day and it was also great that I was able to assist the children during the activities as I had fun doing it as well, especially because I was able to really interact with them. Although there were unexpected happenings in our program such as having to start a little later and having to stall time, everything else was great especially because everyone in the group helped out and gave their efforts. There was constant communication and everyone was willing to give out suggestions, which is good in times where you work with a lot of people.
Reflection
CBR programs are really life-changing and fun especially for the ones we are catering to; however, the process of making it is honestly so stressful, tring and pressuring. No part of the process was easy, there were times that we felt like we didn’t know what we were doing but eventually we were able to get the hang of it.
For our program specifically, our participants were children and I was one of the students who was given the opportunity to be able to go to the center. I was feeling kind of nervous because this was the first time in a long time that I was going to interact with children but at the same time I was also excited. Being able to experience the program in person really was different from just experiencing it online. In person you are able to interact with people and create a bond that you wouldn’t gain if you were an audience online. Like, when the kids were doing the activities, I was able to help and assist them and we were able to talk about the things that they were interested in.
Overall, I would say that the CBR programs experience was great, although there were a lot of stressful times, times where i get so confused or frustrated, it all did not matter in the end especially seeing the outcome where we could see the children being happy or engaged with the activities we gave them or the parents and staff being interested in the seminars and gaining knowledge through it. It was nice to be able to apply our learnings in the programs that we did. Everyone in the class really did their best and gave their best efforts and that was how we were able to have successful programs. <3
