Being an OT student in Velez is one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences in my life. I am still going through that challenge, but I know that the reward will be given in full when we complete this program. We won’t just feel happy about completing but also make our parents proud. It’s true when they say Velez is not easy because it absolutely isn’t; they were not joking about it. However, it shaped me into who I am now, how I think, and how I do things every day. My course didn’t just teach me how to be an OT someday but it also taught me how to be a good person. I began my OT student life with very little knowledge of what OT is. Although with different exposures to rehab science and observation, the best teacher really is experience and having a proper outline and system just like what we have now as a BSOT student. I’m really glad I found my friends right away on the 2nd week of classes and those friends back then are still my friends right now and I know that these people I’ll surely have with me for the rest of my life. I could cry thinking about how good the Lord is in how He orchestrated everything in order for me as I entered into this new chapter of my life. Fast forward to 3rd-year college, I feel so incompetent and lacking in my skills for the internship but I know it’s all a part of it and that what we will be experiencing soon will also help us add to our skills needed to be a good occupational therapist. So far, I feel really blessed to be an OT student. Definitely not easy but I’d rather take this battle every day than any course else.
As a CBH-R Worker
For the Empowerment component, although there were times when we feel so tired working, our group still brainstormed well, and all of the members in the group contributed what they have to contribute as mentioned in the division of tasks. I was a host in our first stakeholders’ meeting and I also helped with the PowerPoint presentation that will be used during the meeting. At first, I was hesitant to be the host because I do not like hosting an online event where audience interaction is completely different from that of face-to-face programs and activities but I’m so glad that the other hosts were my friends and we all were able to project enough to cater the flow of the program and host.
Designing for the actual program is quite difficult because we’re thinking about the actual possible problems that will be encountered during the entire program, all the possibilities, etc. I’m glad that we were given very responsible leaders to spearhead the program and so all the other members’ tasks were to brainstorm and implement what was planned in the brainstorming and meetings. In the designing part, my role was to give out ideas and suggestions since our component wasn’t chosen by our instructors to implement our proposed programs. Though there were some miscommunications, I’m glad my classmates and I were still able to come out with a clean and sorted-out plan for the program proper.
Implementing the program was the best part for sure. I got to facilitate face-to-face and I never hesitated to do so because we all lack face-to-face experiences and I’m really glad I got to serve like that. I was in charge of the snacks and I was really happy making what we gave to them that day for their snacks. Facilitating the program was tiring but extremely rewarding. We were all able to learn and see their struggles and how to help them because the virtual experience was really different from the face-to-face experience. I got to listen and be there fully with my attention not being grabbed by other background noises or the temptation to lay in bed. I hope to experience more of these programs in the future.
Reflection
This subject has definitely taught me a lot. At first, this was very confusing because everyone was working on the same file, and the project becomes too confusing. The leaders are doing their best to organize but it still gets a little too confusing sometimes. During the stakeholder’s meeting, I worked and finished my assignment but I was still confused even until we turned in or submitted our file. It was only for the program that everything was clearer and that we were able to understand what was going on in everything. I am also thankful for this subject because I finally was able to host again after so many years. It wasn’t easy especially because it was done in virtual means and also that my co-hosts were my friends and it was difficult to not laugh while looking at their faces. Despite the challenge, the stakeholder’s meeting was a success and I learned a lot from it. The best part is the program because I was fully immerse in the process and the sentiments were very much felt. My heart is very close to cancer patients for so many personal reasons and seeing those kids suffer at such an early age hurts my heart a lot and so I‘m very thankful for this subject because it allowed me to work with cancer patients again and be a part of such a wonderful cause. It ignited the volunteerism in me and I hope to be working more similar to this in the future because it doesn’t just help me with filling my experiences part in resumes and curriculum vitae but it also adds up to the wisdom I gain along with it. I love everything about serving and I really hope this isn’t the last time. CBR taught me to plan, organize, manage, and implement a community program that will benefit populations. I used to do a lot of community programs but what I learned from this subject definitely helped me develop skills needed for much more effective and efficient program implementation.
