My experience as an OT student in Velez College:
When I enrolled at Velez College, I was already anticipating the hurdles that I would face as an OT student in the college. My journey was not simple, and it still is, but I opted to embrace the challenges and barriers because I knew they would shape me into the best version of myself right now and as a future occupational therapy practitioner. I can compare my experience as an OT student at Velez College to riding a rollercoaster; it's a terrifying ride that only a few would dare to take, but despite the ups and downs, it's a pleasant trip after all.
My Component:
I am a part of the livelihood component, and our group is made up of 16 people divided into four committees. Our goal in the livelihood component is to give parents in Everlasting-HOPE Cebu the opportunity to acquire a financial resource to help them supplement their personal needs, their children, and their families, while also encouraging self-expression through art.
Planning CBH&R program:
I am the program leader for the livelihood component, and I initiated meetings with my group during the planning stage to divide the work among ourselves, from authoring our strategic plan to the operational plan.
The most difficult aspect of creating this program was planning because it required concrete details and a plan. It wasn't tough to brainstorm with my members because they were cooperative and involved during the planning phase.
Designing CBH&R program:
Despite being the program leader, I am also a member of the Marketing and Communication Committee, which is led by Jaznielle Pizarras. My tasks included designing the virtual background and program flow.
Designing the virtual background and program flow was a wonderful experience that definitely freed my creative side in basic graphic design. As the group's leader, I was continually reviewing our preparations and anticipating any stumbling blocks in the program's implementation.
Implementing CBH&R program:
During the implementation period, my responsibility was to lead my group that went on-site. I advised my team members on what they could do and assisted participants throughout the program.
I enjoyed conducting our program on-site because the parents, children, and staff were all involved throughout our program. It was my first time talking to and dealing with so many parents, and I believe I performed well.
In my reflection entry, I will summarize what I learned and experienced throughout the course of OT 323. Because of the complicated concepts we studied and juggling a lot of things with other subjects, both midterm and post-midterm periods were undoubtedly challenging. However, despite the difficulties I had along the way, I learned a lot of key takeaways from this course’s lectures and feedback from our instructors.
During the midterm period, this course taught valuable information about the community and the important aspects of a community. Those topics taught me a lot of things and they did help us in planning, designing, and implementing our program in our chosen community. After knowing the concepts about community, we are taught how to make a plan for our community and develop a program. It wasn’t an easy task and we made mistakes along the way but it didn’t stop me and my groupmates from improving our output to deliver an intricate plan and program.
During the post-midterm period, it was by far the most challenging experience for most of us because we only had minimal time to do worksheets due to heavy workloads. However, we had an opportunity to finalize our plan as a group and make different committees to delegate tasks. As a program leader, I always felt pressure because I want to make our program successful and set the mood for my members. We had obstacles finalizing our plan but we overcame those challenges because I put trust in my members.
To summarize, I have learned a great deal from our lectures as well as our experience developing our program since the midterm period. As a leader, I realized that it is not just about guiding members to complete their jobs, but also about putting your trust in them and being open to their suggestions. With that said, I'd want to express my heartfelt appreciation to our instructors for leading and teaching us the key things we need to know in OT 323, as well as to my groupmates for their cooperation and fun.
