My experience as an OT student in Velez College
It’s been such a rollercoaster ride being an OT student in Velez College. It’s been full of ups and downs, doubts where I didn’t know if I can accomplish the tasks that I had to do but ended up doing it anyway because I wanted to succeed and at the end, I was able to finish it and actually did well. Throughout my experience as an OT student in Velez College, I’ve learned to never give up and at least try even when you feel anxious or scared to do something; at least do your best and try because whatever the result is you’ll still end up thanking yourself for taking the leap of faith. I’ve grown and learned a lot from my experiences whether they were good or bad and I’m proud of where I am today despite all my shortcomings.
My Component
I was assigned under the Livelihood component and was assigned by the group to work with the financial team. We were able to successfully implement the program "It’s the tote that counts" with the goal of helping the parents be given opportunities to make a living through self-employment pursuits, for them to contribute to the well-being of their families and to improve their standard of living.
Planning CBH&R Programs
We looked for a community that would be a great prospect for our community program but we were mostly confused and lost at first since we didn’t know what will exactly happen. We all helped with making the survey as well as with the survey results when we received it from the participants. We based our final program on the answers of the participants especially with their needs for the livelihood component.
Designing CBH&R Programs
During the stakeholder’s meeting, I was assigned to report the survey results that we gathered from the participants. After the feedback that we received from the instructors, we talked about the programs possible that we can offer for the participants and what else we can do for them. We proposed an online seminar workshop, tote bag making, and the beads making activity for the participants. The tote bag making was chosen as the activity to be implemented by us and we immediately worked around it and looked for the needed materials and speakers that would make our program better. It was kind of stressful when we planned for the program especially when we had to consider a lot of things but we were able to properly plan for it at the end.
Implementing CBH&R Programs
I was assigned to work at the financial team during the implementation of the program. We were assigned to source and canvas the materials needed for the program together with Ms. Nicola Canteros, and Ms. Mae Suico. We collected the money from the class and looked for the tote bags needed online and was able to acquire it through the sponsorship of Cebu Canvas bags. There were still a few materials that we needed and looked for together with the team. We were able to buy everything smoothly and ready for the program. The program was a success and we were glad that the materials were enough for everyone at the site and that they enjoyed the activity that we had and learned a lot from the speaker.
For the last few months within this semester, it’s been such a rollercoaster ride with so many uncertainties and doubts along the way but we’re finally here at the end of the line. I was worried about this subject when we just started because we had no idea how to do it and as we continued it was getting more confusing but at the same time, we also made progress with narrowing down the community that we wanted to target. It became even more clear when the stakeholder’s meeting was implemented and we received the feedback from our instructors. I realized that teamwork and communication is very important since there may be a lot of misunderstandings and most especially because this is a project which is supposed to be implemented by everyone in the class. It was stressful and a lot of times where I got to think that this is really tiring but at the end of the day, I still end up doing what I should do and continue. The whole experience was really heartwarming especially when we implemented the program and the parents and children were happy with the activities that they participated in. Through this experience, I learned that I grew a lot as a person, improved and mustered the courage to get out of my comfort zone because of the people around me.
