I have always had a hint of the artistic about me, but I started taking my art seriously in 2011. I specialise in portraiture, and while my (current) medium of choice is pastel, I also have experience working with oil, acrylic, and paint. I also have experience as a photographer, and enjoy predominantly candid photography and microphotography.
Currently, I'm working on a series of 'zef' pastel portraits entitled Good Morning, Sunshine! The aim of the series is to explore a very specific Afrikaner subculture that has been portrayed in the work of artists such as Marlene van Niekerk, Jack Parow, and Die Antwoord. Every portrait depicts a person with a story of their own: likes and dislikes, a backstory, and a reason why they're living the life depicted they have. Each portrait is inspired by either a fictional character or a real person, complete with their own theme song and backstory.
In addition to art, I also have a collection of architectural drawings and designs in a variety of media. Not depicted on this page, you can find these drawings in my complete Portfolio of Creative Work, downloadable from the link below.

Inspired by the protagonist in Marlene van Niekerk's novel, Triomf, Mol is illustrative of the loss of childhood innocence in the face of devastating financial circumstances. Here, she is nostalgically depicted as the young girl she used to be before the realities of life made themselves known to her. Blameless and pure, her innocence is all the more tragic in the context of the broken woman she eventually and inevitably turns into... and with no way out, she embraces the zef lifestyle into which she was born.

Based on Jack Parow's song 'Pappa P', the portrait by the same name depicts a man who, although unhappy, has resigned himself to the way things are. Despite his difficult lives, this character continues to remain true to himself and his culture—even if that culture is sometimes misunderstood when viewed from the outside.

Auntie V, a confident but worn-down woman based on Tannie Stienie, a character in the 1990s series Agter Elke Man. While she constantly complains about her ungrateful husband and rebellious children, she will never leave them: this is the life she continues to choose.

Kandi-with-a-K is a self-portrait inspired by the character, Joy Turner, from the series, My Name is Earl. Depicting a promiscuous young woman with more attitude than she knows what to do with, Kandi is annoyed and disillusioned. She spends her days secretly smoking in the parking lot behind the grocery store, and her nights clubbing with nefarious characters from her neighbourhood.
A portrait of my late mother, 'Mampie' (titled after my nickname for her) is a tribute to the woman who raised me, loved me, and taught me to see the beauty and joy in the world.
Inspired by Bridgett Devoue's quote, "If you're not going to swim in the deep with me, then get out of my waters," 'Never Let Me Go' was titled after a song by Florence and the Machine. In the song, she describes being carried off into the peaceful ocean where she can be at rest at last.
The 'Gabbana Girl' depicts a model from a 2010 Dolce and Gabbana advertisement. My first portrait, it was the moment when I fell in love, not with faces, but with the small details of which faces are put together.
'Hillary' was the first in a series of live figure drawings completed at several workshops at an art school in Bloemfontein under the tutelage of Dina Grobler.

'Girl with an Umbrella' tells the story of a young girl walking down a desolate forest road in the rain. Is it quiet because of the weather, or did she choose this spot because she was sure there would be no other people?
'Girl on the Beach' depicts a young woman on a desolate beach. Even though she is alone, she is kept company by the waves and the wind, and her own thoughts as she stares off into the distance.
As a student, a friend and I had a photography business called AN_ography. We specialised in portraiture, and regularly took photos of fellow students before they went to dances. We also did a few fashion shoots and couple shoots, as well as more artistic projects. At the core of our work was a desire to depict people as they really are—to catch them in those candid moments before they realise you are looking at them.
The models in these photos are predominantly fellow students. From strangers to friends, people we lived with and studied with, we loved getting to know them through the lens of a camera.
