Your junior year will be a challenging one in terms of academics. It's important to work hard and keep up in all your classes since your junior year academic record will impact your choice of colleges and scholarship opportunities next year. Now is the time to start making plans.
Graduation is the Goal.
Some specific things to be on the lookout for this year include:
October: If you think you will qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program, sign up for the PSAT (there is a fee to take the PSAT as a junior). Also, plan to meet with college representatives visiting CHS this year.
(Listen to the morning announcements for details, visit the guidance office, and sign up for Remind to find out when college representatives will be visiting campus.)
October: Parents and students will want to attend SPIN, Student-Parent Information Night, at the Bartow County College & Career Academy. This evening event will feature key presentations about planning for education and work beyond high school. More information will follow be sent home and posted online.
February-March: Counselors meet with juniors to help them select courses for their senior year. Considerations for course selection will be based upon academic progress, relevant test scores, the college selection process, and projected career plans.
March-April: During this time, students should register for the ACT and/or SAT exams that are given in May and June. Pick up registration materials from the Guidance Office or register online. See the links and dates listed below!
May-June: Take the ACT and/or SAT. The ACT or SAT exams are required for admission to almost every college, and most students start to take them during their junior year.
June-August: The summer before your senior year is a good time to visit colleges. Students should call for an appointment first to avoid visiting a campus when it may be closed or between semesters. An interview with an admissions officer is advisable. Pick up application materials whenever you visit, although you will be able to apply to most colleges online through GACollege411.
GAFutures Account Access
GAfutures is our online resource for career exploration, college applications, Georgia HOPE, and additional scholarship information. You should have a GAfutures account that can be accessed at www.gafutures.org Your username should be “student#lastname”, and your password should be “student#”. If that username doesn’t work, try “lastnamestudent#”. If neither login works for you, please see your counselor.
PSAT Results
Several juniors paid to take the PSAT, or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. The PSAT score reports and their actual test booklets were distributed to the students on Monday, Feb. 2nd. Students should know that they may need their results for future reference. If any junior did not receive his or her PSAT results on February 2nd, he or she needs to come by the Guidance Office.
