Asteroid Pursuit is a game where you find yourself in the middle of outer space being chased by a hideous monster. The only way to move is by pushing yourself off of one of the asteroids in the area. But be careful, because once you've pushed yourself off you cannot change your trajectory until you hit another asteroid!
This game was made for a short game jam with the theme: "the creepiest of things". One of the scariest things I came up with was the feeling of helplessness that comes with moving in outer space with no gravity or air resistance. Combined with the tried and true "scary monster that's chasing you" trope, this feeling was made even worse because of the added pressure.
I decided not to add a crosshair in the middle of the screen, because that would make aiming your jump at another asteroid too easy. By not adding a crosshair I also made it so the player would not know for sure if they would make it to the asteroid they were aiming for, because now they would maybe soar past it, throwing themselves into the infinite abyss of space.
Another thing I decided after testing the prototype, was to make the asteroids disappear after the player pushed themselves off of them. This gradually decreases the options the player has and adds an additional element of helplessness to the game. This also lead clearly into a goal for the player: to survive as long as possible. Since it was no longer possible to survive indefinitely when their playing field would slowly be disappearing.
