I grew up in a very small town in the Lowcountry of South Carolina (not even a traffic light). I did well in school because I wanted to make sure that I got out as fast as the law would allow. I entered college with the notion that in four years I would have a degree that I could use to secure a job immediately, work for the rest of my life, and never set foot back in another classroom. Why? Because I HATED school! As I have matured, thankfully I realized that I LOVE learning! Needless to say, I have been in many classrooms – in person and online – since I left college for the first time in 1992. I have a tremendous passion for excellence, intellectual challenges, and lifelong learning. It has taken over 40 years of living, but I have finally realized that my purpose in life is to provide educational services to students of all ages who need personal attention in their studies.
Even before I realized that I was answering my life’s call, I had my first students. When I was in first grade, I remember helping my older sister with her second-grade homework. I don’t recall if I was in elementary or middle school, but my mother would take me with her to her Accounting class at a local community college so that I could help her with her homework. I helped my first official student in Calculus while I was in college. I continued to volunteer at a local private school through college and helped my friends with their college papers. Once I acquired my first job, I could not stay away from the children. I volunteered as a Junior Achievement presenter in the local schools. I have also administered a reading program at a local elementary school for four years, directed summer camps for four years, and conducted various workshops for high school students through nonprofit organizations. Over the years, I have realized that children are not the only ones who need help in school. As a result, I have tutored many college and graduate students in mathematics, writing, and business courses before deciding to create a tutoring enterprise, Promise Learning LLC, specializing in high school and college Physics and mathematics.
My first attempt at achieving a sufficient level of pedagogy involved obtaining my Doctorate of Education in Educational Innovation from Augusta University in May 2020 which offered a theoretical foundation for educating students. I then went on to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Georgia State University in May 2021 to help me achieve the level of practicality that would be necessary to help the larger population of students who truly desire to learn rather than wade through the sea of constant change that we call our educational system. The Developing STEM Professionals as Educators and Teacher Leaders (DSPETL) scholarship offered me the opportunity to pursue my passion while offering financial relief from paying for yet another college degree and a five-year mentorship which concludes at the end of this school year.
