Cultivate an inclusive, caring, and supportive school community that promotes the academic success and well-being of each student. Education leaders build a school culture and climate that supports students being known and valued. The learning environment is personalized so students feel encouraged to engage with others as active learners. In such an environment learners are willing to take chances in their learning since a support system has been built to reinforce student learning. Effective leaders:
Build and maintain a safe, caring, and healthy school environment that meets the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of each student.
Create and sustain a school environment in which each student is known, accepted and valued, trusted and respected, cared for, and encouraged to be an active and responsible member of the school community.
Provide coherent systems of academic and social supports, services, extracurricular activities, and accommodations to meet the range of learning needs of each student.
Promote adult-student, student-peer, and school-community relationships that value and support academic learning and positive social and emotional development.
Cultivate and reinforce student engagement in school and positive student conduct.
Infuse the school’s learning environment with the cultures and languages of the school’s community.
My leadership will prioritize creating an environment where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to do their best. I will advocate for strong support systems that address students’ academic, emotional, and behavioral needs. Building authentic relationships with students will be central to how I lead. When students know they matter, they’re more willing to take responsibility for their learning.
Each year I develop a theme for my classroom. The theme was It's in your D.N.A. - Determination, Network, Actions. The theme include a DNA tree with motivational and encouraging messages as leaves. Students could proactively chose to visit the DNA tree when they needed to be uplifted. I also gave individual students messages when they exhibited efforts toward learning and growth.
I created a butterfly selfie station outside of my classroom using positive words in the school's colors. Students are reminded everyday that they are exceptional and can walk in excellence. Students were able to take selfies to remind them that they are exceptional and loved. The wall was used several times during the year by the journalism class to take pictures of students they were spotlighting that week in the Uproar.
The expectations for my classroom are laminated and placed in a prominent location so all students understand how to interact and treat each other. I explain and discuss the expectations with students at the beginning of the year and several times of the year as reminders. We discuss non-negotiables and focus on respect.
I will continue building this type of relationship with other students with whom I feel a stronger connection. Several of my AP Precalculus students from last year make the extra effort to visit my classroom to discuss their plans and progress in this year’s classes. The boundaries between adult and student are still maintained, but the students feel comfortable discussing their challenges and successes with me.
