Doing well in your classes and choosing challenging coursework
Stay up to date with your assignments and do the best you can on all your school work. Colleges will look at your GPA and doing well on your classes will give you as many options as possible your senior year.
If possible, try to take AP or duel enrollment classes to show you are choosing challenging coursework in high school.
Make sure you are building good relationships with teachers/coaches/counselors because when you apply to college you will want strong options of people who you can call on as your recommenders. These should be people who can speak on your work ethic as well as who you are as a person.
Get involved!
Colleges will ask about what you are doing outside of school and love to see students that are involved in their schools and communities. This could be clubs, jobs, and/or other activities that interest you. It is important to get involved early while you are in high school. Reading your emails daily.
Myself, counselors, and Ms. Patel (who I have CC-ed on this email) all share out opportunities that we hear about via email. This is the best way to know if there are any internships or scholarships available to you that we know of.
