The technology class at Captain Gray STEM elementary was designed with two main objectives in mind.
Both of these objectives support my yearlong learning target, which is each student is able to use classroom technology carefully and correctly. In the computer lab during technology class, the students will practice computer skills that will allow them to access and use different software programs on the computer.
The younger students (K-2) will focus more on learning to use the mouse and keyboard to operate simple programs that reinforce their homeroom academics.
The older students (3-6) will learn to operate software programs that will be utilized throughout their educational career and beyond.
My desired outcome with all Captain Gray Technology Students is that each one will learn to enjoy technology and to use it carefully and correctly.
Kinder, 1st grade, and 2nd grade are learning the basics. Learning to use the mouse and keyboard effectively is essential to learning to operate a computer. Some basic mouse skills the students will need include the left click to open and operate and the left click hold to drag and drop. These skills are important and necessary for the most simple operating of the computer system. The students also need to start learning to use the keyboard. Memorizing the keys and learning to use both hands is the emphasis as beginning keyboard users. Students need to use the right hand for keys on the right and left hand for keys on the left. The students hands are too small to expect them to use home row. Memorization and training themselves to use two hands is the foundation needed to be able to become fluent and efficient keyboarders. ABCya.com is a great place for the students to work on these skills and have fun. This site has numerous games that allow the students to work on and gain the skills listed above.
Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 need to expand their knowledge and experience with technology as well as continue to solidify the foundation created in the earlier grades. Students will be assigned unique leveled lessons via the district adopted Technology curriculum. Students will need to log in to learning.com and complete the lessons assigned. The lessons are designed to continue to strengthen basic skills and build new understanding of different applications and technology. The students will need the specific username and password assigned by Pasco School District to be able to access and use Learning.com. Please email jlandram@psd1.org if you need log in information.
