The SAS trialed the Can-Am in the early 80s. And photos show the bike fitted with the Canadian model 'lunch box' rack. We believe around 20 of this varient were imported for testing.
It is also believed that the SAS had access to 21" front wheels, which were an optional extra at the time.
Records suggest that the SAS used standard bikes throughout the early 80s. As per this example seen in Oman leaning against a Pink Panther Land Rover. Records show bikes being in use with regular army units and later transferring to 22 SAS.
One of the bikes recovered from the deceased estate in 2024, had traces of pink paint left on it. After applying for its history records from the Royal Logistics Museum Archive, it was confirmed to be an ex-SAS bike. However, records don't give any further details as to areas of operation. Only that is was assigned to 22 SAS.
The petrol tank, rear rim and number plate have been kept for preservation. Other rusted parts such as the exhaust, front rim and seat base were scrapped due to being heavily corroded. The plastic fairings and airbox will be reused. And the frame is currently undergoing extensive repairs during Spring 2026. The engine will likely have to be replaced with another, if it can't be restored.
The hope is to display it at military vehicle shows once completed.
