The Influencers
Three Forms of SRL
Environmental Forms
A form of self-regulation that involves monitoring the effects of varying environmental conditions and controlling those conditions strategically
Ex: Tiger Wood's dad would purposely try to distract him during putting in order to teach him how to concentrate in noisy environments
Ex: A teacher's classroom is noisy due to group work but some students like the quite while working so they put headphones in and listen to music/something else
Covert Forms
A form of self-regulation that refers to observing and adapting specific feelings and thoughts
Ex: Mathew Syed,a British champion ping pong player, overcame severe performance anxiety or “choking” by practicing positive mental imagery
Ex: Students overcoming feelings of helplessness/anxiety about testing/public speaking/projects/papers and promoting positive reinforcement/thoughts
Behavioral Forms
A form of self-regulation that involves self-observing one’s performance and adapting it strategically
Ex: British soccer player David Beckham learned to create a tremendous bend in the flight of the ball as a result of extensive practice as a young player
Ex: Practicing different ways to study/prepare for an exam/test/project
This figure refers to how these three forms of SRL are independent feedback loops that regulate covert, behavioral, and environmental processes. More specifically, this models shows how self-regulated learners adapt to changes in their social and physical environments, behavioral outcomes, and covert thoughts and feelings from feedback (Zimmerman, 2010).
Now think about some other examples of these forms that you find in the classroom:
Influencing Achievements with SRL
Short-term Benefits
Self-efficacy for SRL can be linked to self-efficacy for academic achievement, which in turn is predictive of students’ grade goals, as well as their final grades
Overall, do better academically than your counterparts due to self-reflection, goal-setting, and planning
Long-term Ben
People with better SRL have better academic habits
People with better SRL have a higher well-being
Students that start SRL early in childhood have a more likely chance to graduate high school, have an increase college attendance rate, and have higher earnings
