Teaching and teachers are often at the center of debates over the purpose and quality of schooling in the United States, and these debates reveal deep concerns over how we shall live together and how we should distribute social and economic resources.
This course is designed for undergraduates to gain a firmer grasp on what teaching and teachers is all about. This course provides a basic foundation for understanding (a) the nature of teaching as a specialized human activity (as distinct from other human activities) and (b) the organization and conduct of teaching in contemporary U.S. schools. Our hope is that with this understanding in hand, our debates, our worries, our frustrations, and our excitements about schooling can be turned with greater precision toward supporting teaching that is productive and beneficial for all student.
