What is a word rank? Why do I need to retrieve a word 7 times to remember it?
Here you will find answers to these and other questions about the extension.
When you click on "Highlight Words" besides highlighting unknown words and the ones you must retrieve, CarveWords also shows what % of the article's words you already know. It does this by comparing words' rank to your vocabulary level. Say, if you know around 8K words any word with a higher rank than 8K will be considered as unknown.
To hear the pronunciation of the unknown word turn on the Text-to-Speech feature in the Settings tab.
Some words are used more frequently than others. By analyzing a big amount of texts (corpora) linguists can see exactly how frequently is each word used and give them a rank. A high rank means that the word is rarely used.
From an English learner's perspective, this helps to decide which words to learn in the first place. E.g. according to the New General Service List Project (NGSL) their word list (consisting of 2800 words) provides over 92% coverage for most general English texts.
For our extension, we have used NGSL's 30K word list. This should help to learn not only the essential 2800 words but also enrich your vocabulary to the levels of a native speaker.
There are two places where you can see the word rank:
In the Vocabulary tab of the Options
2. On the pop-up. If it doesn't display either its rank is higher than 30K or this feature is turned off. You can turn it on in the Settings tab of the Options.
"The testing effect (also known as retrieval practice, ...) suggests long-term memory is increased when some of the learning period is devoted to retrieving information from memory." - Wikipedia
CarveWords helps you practice retrieval by highlighting learned words, thus reminding you to test yourself - do you remember the meaning of the word?
Here is how you can fine-tune the parameters of the retrieval practice and keep track of your progress:
On the Settings tabs, you can choose how many times you should remember each word (Number of repetitions) before it's considered saved in the long-term memory.
The repetition interval is the pause between remembering. In other words - how many days should pass from one retrieval to the next one?
On the Vocabulary tab, it's displayed how many times you have remembered and forgotten each word.
Keep in mind that when you mark a word as forgotten the number of retrievals goes down to zero. This is in accordance with the principles of retrieval practice - you have really stored something in the long-term memory if you have retrieved it several times in a row.
On the Vocabulary tab you can turn on cloud synchronization. This will enable you to use your word list on different devices and serves a buck up. Learn more about this feature in the Options.
You can export the word list, to import them to CarveWords on another device, or for other programs. You can also import a custom word list to CarveWords.
