May 2008, The Vindicator, Cleveland State University's student magazine, published my creative nonfiction story, “The Groundhog Plan.” Gardens attract groundhogs. Spence's really did, but we had a plan to deal with the hungry varmints.
Here are two excerpts:
He didn't reach for it when the peas were cropped. Not when the beans, peppers, and tomatoes were eaten,. But after pumpkin leaves vanished, my husband Spencer growled and dragged out his Havahart trap.
. . .
The lump matched those made by all the groundhogs I'd ever watched hunching down to eat. But, groundhogs don't have white on their faces, and they feed in the cool part of summer days - dawn and dusk. They are't out at 4:30 a.m.
