November 2009, The Vindicator, Cleveland State University's student magazine, published my creative nonfiction story, “Passing.” My alarm clock malfunctioning horrified me because I would be late for school. What would the principal say? But a bigger shock awaited me.

At desks arranged in blocks of four, the children had been squirming and shispering. When I walked into the room with Spence at my back, however, their bodies stiffened. Were they angry with me for arriving late?

Jerome, the shortest and darkest skinned child, stood. Every muscle in his stout, strong body tensed as he pursed his lips and asked, "Why did you marry that white honky?"
