Welcome to our Learning Module for PATHOL 3500: PathBud (Pathology of Budd-Chiari syndrome). This course focuses on Budd-Chiari syndrome, a rare condition affecting blood flow out of the liver. Throughout the module, we will examine its causes (etiology), underlying mechanisms (pathogenesis), clinical signs and symptoms, methods of diagnosis, and available treatments. The goal is to present this information in a way that is clear, engaging, and accessible for students without a strong science background.
Why Study Budd-Chiari Syndrome?
Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare but striking example of how disrupted blood flow can rapidly destabilize organ function. The disease is caused by hepatic venous outflow obstruction, which directly relates to the hemodynamics of increased hydrostatic pressure, congestion, and impaired venous return described in our hemodynamics unit.

Explain the etiology and pathogenesis of Budd-Chiari syndrome, including how primary and secondary causes of hepatic venous obstruction lead to increased sinusoidal pressure, reduced perfusion, hepatocellular injury, and progression to portal hypertension, fibrosis, and chronic liver disease.
Explain the clinical presentation of Budd-Chiari syndrome, including the classic triad and the progression of symptoms from early-stage congestion to severe complications like ascites, jaundice, and liver failure.
Describe the stepwise management of Budd-Chiari syndrome and how treatments restore blood flow, reduce pressure, and prevent disease progression.
Explain the major complications of Budd-Chiari syndrome and how prolonged obstruction leads to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and multi-organ dysfunction.
