Pathology Learning Module
A comprehensive learning module exploring the hemodynamic mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and management of hepatic venous outflow obstruction.
Welcome to our Learning Module for PATHOL 3500: PathBud (Pathology of Budd-Chiari syndrome). This course focuses on Budd-Chiari syndrome, a rare condition affecting blood flow out of the liver. Throughout the module, we will examine its causes (etiology), underlying mechanisms (pathogenesis), clinical signs and symptoms, methods of diagnosis, and available treatments. The goal is to present this information in a way that is clear, engaging, and accessible for students without a strong science background.
Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare but striking example of how disrupted blood flow can rapidly destabilize organ function. The disease is caused by hepatic venous outflow obstruction, which directly relates to the hemodynamics of increased hydrostatic pressure, congestion, and impaired venous return described in our hemodynamics unit.
Studying this condition helps connect the mechanisms of edema, congestion, thrombosis, and ischemia to an actual clinical scenario
