In February 1987 The Bucksport Historical Society volunteered to take steps in pre
serving two documents in the Buck Memorial Library of considerable historical signi
ficance. The first is a commission granted to Jonathan Buck as 1st Lieutenant in the
Militia of the Province of Massachusetts Bay granted by Thomas Pownall and dated 1758.
The second is a commission granted to Daniel Buck as Captain in the Militia dated 1787
from John Hancock, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The documents were taken to a specialist in fine arts conservation in Portland who
cleaned and repaired them and temporarily enclosed them in an envelope of mylar poly
ester. The Society has voted to have them framed and returned to the library. A.M.J.
Robert L. Parker of North Reading, MA and Bucksport ME has written and had published
two booklets of interest. "The Crimia Visits Southwest Harbor", the story of a Russian
ship in Maine waters and a second narrative touching upon life in early Bucksport and
an incident at Indian Point during the construction of the paper mill, entitled "Sea
side Yarrow - A Bucksport Story". Both will be on sale at the Musevim for $2.50 a copy.
Various changes have been made and others are planned in the area of the Museum in
connection with the new sewer line and development of the waterfront property now
owned by the town. We have had to have a new waterline installed this spring and are
gratefUl~to Welman McFarland for getting this done for us plus a new sigh and rail on
the sidewalk fence. Arthur Joost has arranged for the mowing of the lawn and the Garden
Club has very generously filled the window boxes with plants again this year. Betty
Thegen with the help of Eloise Kinstler are seeing to the cleaning of the Museum.
The Museiim will be opening July 1st for the summer and will be open each Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday in July and August from 1 to 4 p.m. The Directors Betty Thegen,
Louise Sanborn and Polly Spratt have charge of securing the host and hostess for the
season. Please volunteer your help. C.T.B.
OPEN HOUSE will be held on Wednesday, August 12th from 1 to 8 p.m. We will plan to
have the same good day of fellowship as in past summers and hope to have some interest
ing attractions. Winifred Wasson will be in charge of refreshments for the day. We
hope to see you at our OPEN HOUSE.
The Bucksport Museum is in a fine old R.R. Station right at the head of Penobscot Bay.
Directly across the bay is Fort Knox built in that strategic location because of the
1812 War. There are many fascinating artifacts in our Bucksport Museum but my favor
ite is a long wooden sign placed over one of the doors. It warns vehicular traffic
(mostly horse and wagon) not to go faster than a walk when crossing the old bridge from
Verona Island to Bucksport. B.M.
We have been looking into acid free protective paper and covers to exhibit and preserve
many articles and documents. Any ideas on how to do this preservation properly would
be appreciated. N.N.
An opportunity to pay one's membership dues, if you have not already done so, is
