The original double house was built jointly by Amos Buck Darling and Thomas Swazey. The house was remodeled in 1881 by Julia Darling Barnard after her husband Enoch Barnard purchased both halves of the house in 1843. The house is Colonial Revival in style.

Edgar Allen Poe Newcomb (1846 - 1923), of Boston, was the architect hired to design a vastly enlarged house that would have a large drawing room to the left, a handsome paneled library to the right and a lovely dining room behind it with the stained glass windows in the newly added bow window. In the library you will be able to see the English Mintons tile around the fireplace. The Shakespeare tiles were designed by John Moyr Smith and made by Mintons in 1872.
