It's often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. There is no faster way to get pictures of world events than social media. We are able to livestream astronauts going to space, we can see the impacts of wars, and we can share our daily lives with our friends we can't physically see. Im grateful that social media is here but I am nervous for what the outcomes will be.
The quiz found that I am "fairly reliant" on social media. I think that's fairly accurate. I am on social media more than I think I should be. Although, since I now know that YouTube counts as social media then I know that I am on way too much. I recently found a video from a channel that was incredibly captivating. That has lead me to falling asleep learning about the history of the world.
I thought this was one of the more interesting statistics from the PEW research page because the percentage of people who say socal media is a negative was way more than I expected. The most cited reason that it's negative is for misinformation. Looking at where the data came from I see that it was published in 2020. In that context it makes sense that it was so high on the list of the publics criticisms. I think I heard the words "Fake news" in 2020 more than I heard my own name.
Social media is largely destructive force that we may not see the true consequences for years to come. I consider myself lucky to have gone the majority of my childhood without access to social media. Today, social media is practically impossible to avoid. World news is shared on twitter, friends want to share what they are doing on Instagram, even jobs are harder to apply for without LinkedIn. But, for all its bad, social media is incredible for some things.
Such as:
Connecting to people around the world
Quickly sharing information
Accessing educational videos
I learned that I depend on social media more than I thought but after reading the article from pew research I know that I am not incredibly out of line from how most Americans are. I will have to decrease the amount of time I spend in order to succeed in the future. Especially, if I get in the radiography program. There will be no time for work, school, social media and a life of happiness. One has got to go.
