Court observers attend hearings, observe proceedings, document what they see, and offer a steady presence in a system that can feel isolating and overwhelming. They help bring greater public awareness to the realities migrants face in immigration court.
Creates accountability: the presence of observers creates a sense of oversight and accountability for immigration judges, DHS attorneys, and court personnel.
Identifies concerning trends: gathering accurate and up-to-date information regarding new patterns or practices in the court will allow legal advocates and non-represented migrants to be better prepared. Here is an example of the power of observation.
Informs advocacy and litigation: observations made and data collected will inform advocacy and litigation strategy aimed at challenging harmful practices and policies.
Provides solidarity: observers offer a respectful, non-disruptive presence so migrants know they are not alone during difficult legal moments.
Important: Court observers are not attorneys and do not provide legal advice.
The Chelmsford Immigration Court watch team, along with the Boston Immigration Court watch team comprises the New England Immigration Court Watch team. Volunteer observers watch court proceedings in person, collect data and submit that data to various court observation efforts. One effort is the MA Statewide Immigration Court Data Collection for Systemic Change, which is collaboration of immigration advocacy groups such as MIRA, MLRI, the Mabel Center and many others.
Blessed Trinity Parish has a growing court observer group. As part of this group you will:
