Catholic social teaching is central to this ministry, providing guidance to our actions. Catholic social teaching is a distinct church doctrine that basically guides us on how to love our neighbor.  Although rooted in scripture, it was expanded upon by popes and other church leaders who wrote documents related to social and economic issues that were important in their time.    

The last Pope Leo (XIII) was the first to formalize the concept of catholic social teaching through his encyclical Rerum Novarum during the industrial revolution - the late 1800s.  He wrote about the injustices being suffered by the working class who lived and worked in horrible conditions.
