Activity 1

Using and Evaluating Rubrics

Rubrics make clear the knowledge, skills and understandings that are being assessed by a particular task. They:

  • communicate what the expectations are of student performance in the task

  • clarify how an assessment piece will be marked

  • enable specific feedback about the knowledge, skills and understandings demonstrated in the student’s work.

The aim of this activity is to evaluate a series of rubrics and consider what aspects of rubric writing can be problematic.

The art teacher has set a task whereby students must create an image summarising their identity.

There are 6 pictures below. Regardless of the subject you teach at school, use the rubric found underneath each image to evaluate the picture.

Each picture and rubric can be downloaded underneath each picture and also here: Pictures and Rubrics

Consider the strengths and weaknesses of each rubric as you use it.

Consider the alignment and make refinements

Examine the tasks and rubrics from SACE here. Chose one of the tasks and consider how the rubrics might be more closely aligned to the task in its choice of language.

Now complete activity 1 by submitting your evaluations of each rubric here: Evaluation Activity Don't forget to press submit when you have finished.
