MICHAEL S. KRIEGER
PRESIDENT OF THE BSCTA
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Bay Shore Classroom Teachers’ Association. For many of you, this is the first time that you are a member of a union and might not know its purpose and significance. In short, our goal is to make your experience here at Bay Shore valuable and stress-free.
When you become a teacher in Bay Shore, you also become a member of a national and statewide union. The AFT represents the teachers throughout the United States, while NYSUT represents teachers’ interests at the state level. A large percentage of our annual dues are sent to both of these associations, as they attempt to further our professional interests and ensure stability and safety in the classroom.
The BSCTA, your local union, will impact you the most in your daily endeavors. This association is responsible for negotiating all the terms and conditions under which you are employed. Furthermore, the BSCTA is responsible for any grievances or disputes that might occur within each building, as well as handling district-wide concerns. Each of the seven buildings in Bay Shore elects teacher representatives to address any problems that might arise. These representatives meet with the Executive Board every month to carry out the business of the association. Please check the minutes that are emailed to your personal email address for news updates and other helpful pieces of information. Lastly, please get involved and attend our social and fundraising events throughout the year.
Best of luck this school year, and please do not hesitate to contact me or call 631-968-9122 if you should ever need anything.
