It is with great sadness that I write to you this afternoon to inform you of the passing of one of our faculty members. Yesterday, Mr. Christopher Loewen, a teacher at Bay Shore High School, passed away. I join the Bay Shore High School family, and the larger Bay Shore family, in mourning his loss. Our thoughts are with Mr. Loewen's family, friends, colleagues, and students during this difficult time.
If there is anyone who feels that they need to speak to someone about Mr. Loewen’s passing, please do not hesitate to reach out to Kristina Cope in Human Resources or your building administrator. In my experience, it is at times like this that our Bay Shore family truly comes together as one; in this spirit, please check in on your colleagues today and throughout the week to make sure everyone has the support they need.
After first being hired as a Special Education teacher in 1995, Bill moved to the Social Studies department, where he worked for over 25 years at Bay Shore Middle School. Not only did Bill positively influence the lives of his students in the classroom over the past few decades, he also worked diligently to assist the BSCTA in multiple capacities. Bill served as a building rep and Executive Board member for numerous years, and was also a duly elected delegate to the NYSUT, AFT, and NYSTRS conventions. He loved his union and was a staunch advocate of consistently promoting our core beliefs and values.
If you knew Bill, you knew a guy who would do anything to help others, regardless of how much effort it took. To say that his presence amongst our membership will be missed is an understatement.
