Design 5 challenges students to create a multi-functional, medium-scale building complex within the urban context of Kulai, Johor. Each project will cover 2000 square meters, rising 4-5 storeys, and utilizing a site area of 1.0 to 1.5 acres. The course emphasizes the complexities of architectural design by integrating vertical services, optimizing site utilization, and responding to urban constraints. Students will adopt a pragmatic, context-sensitive approach to architectural problem-solving, balancing aesthetic, functional, and environmental considerations within the urban fabric of Kulai.

The course employs an issue-driven methodology, guiding students to develop individualized briefs based on comprehensive site analyses, case studies, and stakeholder requirements. With 9 unique workbases distributed across Kulai, students will address the distinct environmental, cultural, and regulatory conditions of each location. This tailored approach ensures that designs are attuned to the needs and character of the local community while fostering innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in urban development.

A key aspect of this course is the integration of sustainability principles and technical systems into architectural solutions. Students will engage with vital elements such as building regulations (e.g., UBBL), feasibility studies, and construction methods, ensuring their designs are not only functional and efficient but also environmentally and socially responsive.
