BSC.ARCH HONS E-PORTFOLIO REVIEW
Y3 DESIGN STUDIO 5
Y3 DESIGN STUDIO 5
Design 5 challenges students to create a multi-functional, medium-scale building complex within the urban context of Kulai, Johor. Each project will cover 2000 square meters, rising 4-5 storeys, and utilizing a site area of 1.0 to 1.5 acres. The course emphasizes the complexities of architectural design by integrating vertical services, optimizing site utilization, and responding to urban constraints. Students will adopt a pragmatic, context-sensitive approach to architectural problem-solving, balancing aesthetic, functional, and environmental considerations within the urban fabric of Kulai.
The course employs an issue-driven methodology, guiding students to develop individualized briefs based on comprehensive site analyses, case studies, and stakeholder requirements. With 9 unique workbases distributed across Kulai, students will address the distinct environmental, cultural, and regulatory conditions of each location. This tailored approach ensures that designs are attuned to the needs and character of the local community while fostering innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in urban development.
A key aspect of this course is the integration of sustainability principles and technical systems into architectural solutions. Students will engage with vital elements such as building regulations (e.g., UBBL), feasibility studies, and construction methods, ensuring their designs are not only functional and efficient but also environmentally and socially responsive. These considerations will support the development of designs that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing the importance of responsible, forward-thinking architectural practice that addresses both present and future needs.
The course fosters a dynamic learning environment through active, project-based methods, including studio critiques, site visits, and technical workshops. Students will explore macro and micro site analyses, diverse building typologies, and placemaking strategies, enhancing their ability to create meaningful and impactful spaces. By the end of the course, students will have the skills to deliver innovative and comprehensive architectural solutions, reflecting a deep understanding of urban dynamics, technical systems, and sustainability, thus preparing them to confidently tackle real-world architectural challenges.
