BSC.ARCH HONS E-PORTFOLIO REVIEW
Y1 DESIGN STUDIO 1
Y1 DESIGN STUDIO 1
Design 1 introduces the essential fundamental theories of design in architecture. Students undergo a series of design projects relating to design thinking and skills in 2D and 3D composition, creative ideas generation, form making, and spatial articulation. The design exercises require an appropriate design method and process demonstrating skills development in perceiving, imagining, analysing, and synthesizing a particular issue.
Projects are arranged progressively from one project to the other regarding the learning outcome and complexity. Project 1 introduces the importance of 2D composition by translating the surrounding environment into product painting. Project 2 explores the extrusion from 2D into 3D design composition through relief paper artwork into the expected project outcome. Project 3 next allows students to start exploring 3D design through form-making by designing 1:1 scale costumes. Lastly, Project 4 allows the students to critically produce, organize, articulate, and define spatial qualities within a given brief and context.
Design 1 emphasizes the importance of observation, creative and critical thinking, the relationship between humans and the environment, human ergonomics and anthropometrics, design principles such as scale and proportion, and form-making and spatial articulation within the given parameters.

PROJECT 1 - PRODUCT PAINTING (SHOES)
PROJECT 2 - COSTUME DESIGN
PROJECT 3 - POP-UP BOOK
PROJECT 4 - FOLLY
Students required to work in teams of three to construct a warrior costume based on a selected design created by another person who is not in the group. This phase of the project enhanced students’ ability to engage in lifelong learning by fostering teamwork, encouraging handson experience, and requiring them to navigate and overcome the challenges of constructing a design they did not create.
Teams started by carefully analyzing the assigned design and understanding its structural, material, and ergonomic aspects. It's crucial that they maintain open and effective communication with the original designers to ensure a clear understanding of the design intent, dimensions, and material choices. Teams presented their final product in the Cosplay Runway Show.

The proposed site for this project is Bamboo Avenue, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. All 39 students are be divided into four (4) groups cross-workbase, each focusing on one (1) specific site element with guidance from workbase's masters.
• Physical site context – dimensions, topography, and boundaries
• Natural Elements – vegetation, water bodies, habitats
• Sensory and Experiential Qualities – visual, auditory, tactile, smell
• Site model
“MASUK JURUS” is specially tailored for new architecture students at UTM. It aims to provide a strong foundation and bonding between students and academicians throughout the Architecture course.
