What Research Says About Afterschool Program
Research shows that high-quality afterschool programs improve students’ educational outcomes, school attendance, and social and emotional learning. Afterschool Alliance claims that quality afterschool programs understand that children and youth in different age groups vary in academic, psychological, and physical activity needs. Consistent participation in afterschool programs has shown lower dropout rates and has helped close achievement gaps for low-income students. For older youth, regular participation in an afterschool program may also reduce risky behaviors and help them gain college and career-needed skills.
Afterschool programming has been shown to improve social and academic outcomes for students, however, research points to certain key elements for success. To fully realize all the positives of afterschool programming, students must receive a regular dosage, adequately trained staff, and high-quality programming. Since 2004, Afterschool Alliance has provided the most comprehensive national and state-specific account of how children and youth spend their afterschool hours. In their 2020 America After 3PM report, one of the biggest takeaways is the continued demand for afterschool programs. According to their research, for every child enrolled, three are waiting to get into a program. That equates to roughly 25 million children who are unable to access afterschool programs. The barriers cited are program cost, availability, and transportation or accessibility.

We've received this resource thanks to First Book, a non-profit organization who supports equity in education by providing books and resources to schools and programs across the country.
Get started with Open eBooks by following the simple set-up instructions below:
Step 1: Go to the app store on your Apple or Android device and search for “Open eBooks” and download the app for FREE. The Open eBooks app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices (requires minimum iOS 10 or Android 6). Open eBooks does not work on all Chromebooks or have a web browser version at this time.
Step 2: When prompted in the app, log in by entering the access code and PIN combination I’ve provided below. Your access code/PIN never expires—it’s like a library card you never need to renew! Please note that this log in information is anonymous. Open eBooks takes student privacy seriously and does not collect or share any data from app users.

Step 3: Check out books from the incredible selection of titles available within the Open eBooks app and start reading!
The Open eBooks app allows you to check out up to 30 eBooks at a time. Each eBook will be available for 30 days before it must be renewed. Within the app, you can choose eBooks based on topics of interest or search by title or author. Open eBooks titles can be downloaded read offline. However, browsing available titles and checking out a book requires internet access. When using the app, standard data rates apply.

Summer Reading Program
Fostering a love of reading and its rewards, the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is popular with students in first through sixth grades and educators throughout America.
Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August.
