BRMTWN is a collective of storytellers, community advocates, data captors, creative producers, and support group members.
We love making things happen, whether we're looking at arts, media, academia, or community work. And storytelling is at the heart of what we do.
Established in 2018 by Jaz Morrison.
OUR CODE OF CONDUCT
STORYTELLERS
We take hold of narratives about ourselves, communities, homelands, and our futures. We see this as both our responsibility and our freedom; and we will do this in a multitude of forms. Storytelling presents the opportunity for us to make sense of ourselves and the world around us; but also to commemorate and respond to the relevancies in our city.
COMMUNITY ADVOCATES
We care about our communities – however we define them – and we back up our sentiments with action. Love is a verb. We centre our communities in the work we do, and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, age, gender, sexuality, religion, class, dis/ability (physical or otherwise), language, or ethnicity. We consider bigotry unacceptable and have a zero tolerance policy to it being perpetuated in our spaces or project work.
DATA CAPTORS
We memory-make. As important as it is to make things happen in the city, it is also important that we are documenting what we do. Many community relics are rendered inaccessible through archives, museums, and other institutions that have taken ownership of them. By documenting community and grassroots activity – ours and others – we build our own accessible community archive for Brummies to be inspired and informed.
CREATIVE PRODUCERS
We make stuff happen. Most of us come from a creative background, and find being creative its own act of resistance in a city with fluctuating resource distribution. It is imperative that we continue to find ways to be creative; that we work together creatively; and that we ideate creative ways of addressing community themes. We also have a responsibility to ‘offer a ladder’ and bring in amateur and interested community members when we rise in our creative fields.
SUPPORT GROUP MEMBERS
We are here for each other. It is not easy being creative and motivated when working full time jobs, volunteering in communities, and looking after loved ones. It is important that we offer one another emotional, logistical, and critical support where we can. After all, a rising tide lifts all boats.
