Poetry Event
The poems I selected to read are Clock and Future by Maggie Smith from her Good Bones collection. I chose this poetry because I appreciate its keen and compassionate view of the human experience, and the acceptance of the darkness, complementary to the light.
I believe Clock talks about death and how sometimes genetics or disease decide when it is our time to go. Sometimes God chooses when it is our time to go too. Time and the human body are captivating themes that I enjoy meditating on.
Future is more optimistic. It reminds us that we can change if we choose to at any moment. The cup of life you drink from is a path that appears before you with every step you take, no matter the direction. This reminds me of the scene in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland when Alice walks through the woods and the path materialises before her. And, just like in Future, I believe the message is (if there is one to be had) to accept your journey as you discover who you are.
I also read one of my own poems, Sorry. It was something I had to get off my chest and is still in the developmental stage.
