With the same professor (shown cheesing under the ginkgo tree) and four other students, I flew to the village of Oak Park for an optional class trip earlier in the semester. Oak Park is a lovely village and the home of Ernest Hemingway's birth and Frank Lloyd Wright's studio. Three photos are from the Hemingway Archives of the library's Special Collections at which we saw the "Dear Ernie" letter from Agnes von Kurowsky. We toured the birthplace home and his church (we are sitting in Grace Hall Hemingway's pew, number 445) and viewed his boyhood home, elementary school, and high school. We also toured Wright's home and studio, viewed houses he designed around the block, and visited the Art Institute of Chicago.
Part of Honors English 398: Hemingway & Faulkner is a required trip to Oxford. The ten of us followed Professor Walker Rutledge through the University of Mississippi, three cemeteries, Faulkner's home Rowan Oak, and downtown Oxford. Although this trip truly brought literature to life, our dinner at Taylor Grocery was personally significant. Since I am from Morgantown, the self proclaimed Catfish Capital of the World, I enjoyed the fish deemed worthy by the Catfish Institute, as shown by the plaque below.
