BRISTOL SPARTANS
BASKETBALL CLUB
The Home of Bristol University Basketball
This is the official website for the University of Bristol Spartans Basketball Club.
Here, you can find essential information about our club.
How can I get involved in basketball at Bristol University?
We have three competitive mens teams and two competitive womens teams.
Both our womens teams play in BUCs.
Two of our mens teams play in BUCs.
The third mens team plays in WEBBA (Local League), and also in the University Intramural League.
Players are selected for these teams at our trials in September/October. Retrials may also be ran in January, where spaces are available in teams. Current members of the club can be promoted up a team at any time, should spaces become available.
Please see "Calendar" for details of our training session.
What if I don't make a team/want a more social game?
We host an open session called Spartans League where players of any gender and any ability are welcome to join a weekly scrimmage tournament.
It cost £60 to register for the whole year, and includes a free personalised Spartans t-shirt.
Those on a competive team may also attend Spartans Leagues sessions, for no additional charge.
At the start of each tournament, players are approximately spread into fair teams.
Players from our competitive teams will be methodically distributed to make teams as equal as we possibly can.
This may mean you are split from your friends; Spartans League should be seen as an opportunity to meet new people and step outside your comfort zone.
This way, the basketball stays more fair and everyone has the opportunity to match up to somoene of similar ability.
Everyone will be in the same boat, which means no-one will notice/care if you turn up to Spartans League without knowing anyone there!
The tournament resets each week, so you can dip in and out as works with your schedule.
All club members are also invited to join weekly skills sessions.
These will allow you to build your skill set, learn from others, and gives you an opportunity to practice shooting/technique.
These are peer-led; if you have a skill to share then we would encourage you to get in contact. Running a session can be a rewarding and educational experience.
Can I sign up to Spartans League with a group of friends?
We reset the teams each week to allow for flexibility and because it means you get to meet more new friends and play with different people!
You can still arrive with friends, and cheer each other on, but you might not be playing on the same team.
You accrue points as an individual - based on how many times you are on a highly performing team.
We also run the University's Intramural league, so if you're looking to compete on a team of coursemates or flatmates, then sign up to that to get your basketball fix! Check out the main Bristol SU website for more details.
We host weekly socials, and also two formals per year - see Calendar for more info!
Connected Charities
At Bristol Spartans, we are keen supporters of charitable work. We enjoy connecting with the wider community and recognise the positive benefits that volunteering can have for our mental health.
Our two current chosen charities are Nova Sports & Papyrus. We host regular events to fundraise and increase awareness.
Papyrus
Papyrus supports the mental health of young people, with confidential advice and support.
They help both those who are struggling, and those who are supporting someone who is struggling (including health professionals).
More information can be found on their website
You can contact Papyrus 24/7 on:
