The Culture of Each Classroom
Classroom culture is built on the teachers’ embracing each child and family’s individuality, perspectives, and differences. Following are strategies that teachers use to build the classroom’s culture.
Respect individuality through embracing and incorporating interests, abilities/disabilities, cultural backgrounds, and home traditions/practices into the classroom.
Invite positivity and fairness into the learning environment through providing every child with equal opportunity to succeed. Individualize learning according to each student’s needs.
Use positive guidance and redirection while guiding children’s learning and thinking. Positive guidance is also used during social conflicts, helping the children work through the issues.
Increase the learning and growth of the children through active engagement and collaboration.
Collaborate with families while setting and modifying the students’ academic goals. In addition, invite families to get involved by volunteering in the our program and communicating regularly.
Release biases and assumptions of cultures and socioeconomic statuses. Invite families to share information about their cultures to incorporate into the classroom. Offer resources and alternative options to families in need.
