I stayed In a garage! of a fancy motel. It had been fixed up and was quite presentable, and within walking distance of the town. You can see the town of Thira sits like Icing atop the Island, as do the other towns along the ridge. The museum contains the murals from Acrotiri.
Nowadays there's a cable car going up and down from the port, but the path for the donkeys still exists. I took the lift down to a tour boat out to the caldera of the ancient volcano.
I rented a car to drive up Mesa Vouno mountain to the ancient Hellenistic Thera site. Loved It! Drive was a bit scary though! The day was clear and gorgeous. Rather wish I'd beenable to take a swim.
And then I drove to Acrotiri, which is of an age with the Minoan sites. It was still an active archaeological dig and under plastic roofing. The frescoes have been moved to the museum In Thera.
