In 2003, I went to Athens to join an Earthwatch group which was "digitizing" Greek artifacts which were In museums In Athens. Unfortunately the P.I. had not checked with the Athens museum about this, and the Athens museum was closed and under renovation. The Benaki museum did not give us permission to photograph the artifacts. I'm not sure If the museum on the Acropolis, which held the treasures found there, now housed In the new museum slightly off-site, gave us permission, but we did photograph there. I'd been to Athens In 1983; this time It was spiffing up for the Olympics, but the Parthenon was seriously dismantled.
After the Eathwatch group disbanded, I travelled to Naxos and Santorini alone, and enjoyed my visits In both.
A lovely time to wander around Athens on my own.
Despite staying slightly away from the center of town, I enjoyed the freedom to go where I wanted, and rented a car to visit the archaeological sites at Thera and Acrotiri.
I went to Naxos because I wanted to go to Delos, but the ferries weren't right, so I enjoyed the Island, took a tour, and relaxed. Lovely place.
