Then, I became a K-12th Recruitment Co-Coordinator for REACH! my 2nd year and eventually External Exec my 3rd year 🌱 bridges has always been my main pillar of community… so I am so incredibly honored and grateful to be serving as the External Executive Director this year😭✨

This year, I hope to build meaningful and intentional partnerships with student-led campaigns, campus orgs, and student advocates, who share the same vision for recruitment and retention of first-gen, low-income Black, Indigenous, students of color. Once I arrived on campus I decided to fellow for bridges and really loved the experience 🥹. I decided to apply to be apart of staff and I continue to really enjoy being part of this community because it so caring and kind 🫶🏽.

Retention Director

-

Kristal Roman

Hi everyone! My name is Kristal Roman (she/her/ella), and I am this year’s bridges Retention Director. In my role, I work to provide our students with resources that are relevant to their identities as first generation, low income, Black, Indigenous and peoples of color. This includes working alongside the RRCs to share/create resources and programs that deal with aspects of academic, social, wellness, and professional retention to ensure that our students are supported in their journeys of navigating higher education until completion. 🕺🏽🕺🏽

I joined the bridges coalition my first year at Berkeley, after being a Cal Week (virtual SW) participant and attending a virtual Familia Orientation (Latine orientation event through Raíces and the CLSD). I was really interested in seeking community among other students of color through my college experience, and bridges made me feel secure that I could find that at Cal. My first two years I interned and worked as a coordinator for Raíces doing Retention services, and I decided to make the transition to bridges because I wanted to learn more about the Retention-specific issues that varying communities of color encounter in higher education and learn how to better advocate for and meet these needs.

Beyond bridges, I’m currently a third year double majoring in Political Science (🤬) and Ethnic Studies and minoring in Education.retentionbridges@gmail.com

Jose Manuel Fernandez (they/he)

bridges Director

From the Mid-City neighborhood of Tovangaar in the Los Angeles Basin, Jose Fernandez (they/he) is excited about returning to UC Berkeley as the new Director of the bridges Multicultural Resource Center.

This community played a significant role in influencing Jose's decision to pursue higher education professionally and academically. His approach as a student affairs scholar-practitioner is shaped by his experiences as a first-generation, low-income student of color at UC Berkeley and UCLA (B.A. Ethnic Studies; M.Ed.

Student Affairs).

While at Cal as an undergraduate, Jose held leadership roles at the Raíces Recruitment & Retention Center and later served as the Operations Director for bridges. During this period, Jose led the development and successful passage of the Student Transformation through Academic Recruitment and Retention (STARR) referendum, supporting the long-term sustainability of the bridges coalition. Since graduating from Cal, they have worked in higher education and college access, leading postsecondary outreach and retention initiatives with organizations such as UC Berkeley Destination College Advising Corps, UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives, and Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. In their graduate studies at UCLA’s Master in Student Affairs program, Jose focused on understanding the possibilities of partnerships between student-initiated recruitment and retention programs and student affairs practitioners. Jose looks forward to supporting bridges students, campus staff, and faculty in creating a more equitable and just experience for all members of the UC Berkeley community.
