In 2011, both the bridges MRC and the Queer Alliance Resource Center (QARC) were temporarily moved to Hearst Field Annex (HFA) during the Eshleman renovations.
In 2015, bridges returned to Eshleman’s basement, which proved inadequate in serving our personal and programmatic basic needs, including a no windows, lack of natural lighting, and limited space for RRC expansion.
In 2016, #Fight4Spaces campaign was launched by bridges & QARC. This concerted effort addressed the community’s growing frustrations with lack of dedicated, accessible & visible spaces on campus.
QARC and bridges mobilized by entering the Cal Student Store and sitting on the floor doing homework, without bothering shoppers. Store management closed the store and prevented new students from entering. Students gathered, blocking the entrance to Sproul, and eventually took an opportunity to rush in. To avoid an overnight sit-in, the Dean and ASUC Union Director agreed to a meeting.
After the meeting with the Dean and ASUC Union Director, the demands were still not being met, so students engaged in a blockade at Sather Gate. Management kept the student store closed, resulting in a $300,000 loss to the University in vendor payments. To this day, student organizations are still fighting for visibility on campus.
