Creating a Code of Conduct and a Healthy Learning Community
Classroom rules should be discussed as a whole class. It allows for the students to feel a part of the classroom and that their voice matters. It also allows for a good introduction to Social Emotional Learning because it brings in the themes of empathy and self-regulation while creating a set of rules for the classroom. Ginnott spoke about the importance of teachers having to watch themselves just as closely as they watch their classroom. When discussing rules and expected behaviors it's important that teachers themselves are modeling these behaviors. It allows for students to feel as though they are being held to the same as their teacher when it comes to behavior and tone.
Some rules that I would hope my students would come up with would be along the lines of:
Give and Recieve Honest Feedback
being open to talking about things we like and do not like in a polite and constructive manner
Keep ourselves and others emotionally and physically safe
put ups no put-downs
Be emotionally kind to ourselves, meaning no "
Let it go
if we have a disagreement with friends, we should have a kind conversation to work it out and then move on
