Brandeis teachers and staff are committed to working with parents and students to create a learning partnership. Brandeis offers various resources to help students achieve academic success. Students and parents are encouraged to speak with their counselor to develop an academic plan that fits the needs of the individual student.
In order to receive course credit, students must meet both the academic standard and the state attendance requirements. Grades and Attendance can be reviewed using the Home Access Center (HAC).
Promotion to the next grade level is based on accumulation of credits earned.
Grade 9 (0 - 5.5 credits)
Grade 10 (6 - 11.5 credits)
Grade 11 (12 - 18.5 credits)
Grade 12 (19+ credits)
It is state mandate that students attend class for a minimum of 90% of scheduled class time in order to receive credit. Students may not be absent (excused or unexcused) more that 8 days in Semester 1 and more than 10 days in Semester 2. Students will be denied credit if they exceed the maximum number of absences even if they earn a passing grade.
Students that have been denied credit due to attendance may regain credit by enrolling in Attendance Recovery. Parents and students may contact the Attendance Secretaries for any questions regarding attendance.

Tutoring is available for students needing additional help before and after school. Students should check with their teachers for tutoring hours and availability.
The Lunchtime Support Center is available during all lunches to provide additional time to work on assignments. Students can bring their lunch and work in a quiet space.
Additionally, NISD offers tutoring after hours and on weekends. Students may click on the NISD Homework Support tile in Schoology to be directed to a virtual tutor.
Parents are encouraged to maintain communication with their child's teachers by phone, email, or online meetings to receive feedback on progress and create a learning partnership. Parents may also schedule a conference with the teachers, student, counselor, and administrator by contacting the Main Office at 210-397-8200. Conferences are scheduled before and after school.
Summer school provides an excellent opportunity for students who may wish to make up credits because of time lost from an extended illness, failure of a subject, or a desire to review a subject in preparation for more advanced work. Students wishing to attend summer school should seek information and approval from their counselor.
The Credit Retrieval program allows students to retrieve credits for failed courses through computer based learning. Students who successfully complete the course work prescribed will be awarded the appropriate course credit with a grade of 70. The grade will not replace the prior failed grade, but will be shown as a separate grade and credit completion.
The Credit Retrieval program is offered before school, during school, after school, and during the summer. Students may contact their counselor for additional information and program eligibility.
NCAA Eligibility does not accept course credits earned through Credit Retrieval.
Units of credit may be taken by correspondence, applicable toward graduation, upon approval by the counselor. Only courses from correspondence schools approved by the Texas Education Agency will be accepted for credit.
A student must enroll for such subjects prior to October 1st of the current school year, if it is to be counted toward graduation, and must be completed on or before April 1st prior to June graduation. Successful completion of such work is the responsibility of the student and the institution from which the work is scheduled.
Students who believe they have already mastered the content of any academic course, with or without prior instruction in the course, may apply for Credit-byExam testing. The students should contact their counselor to get the Credit-by-Exam application and to determine eligibility.
Please visit the NISD Testing and Evaluation website for additional information.
Students and parents need to be aware that, under a new ruling from the NCAA, students aspiring to attain athletic scholarships from the NCAA colleges and universities should work to pass all their courses. NCAA does not allow credit for non-traditional courses. These courses include correspondence courses, on-line courses, and credit retrieval. It is important for students to speak to their counselor and coaches about the choices available to ensure meeting this requirement.
