The historical investigation is designed to further develop relevant investigative, research and presentation skills.
The historical investigation should extend a particular area of student interest.
The historical concepts and skills content is to be integrated as appropriate.
The investigation also provides the context for a practical application of the general capabilities.
As defined in the NSW Ancient History Stage 6 Syllabus, the Ancient period covers history from the development of early human communities to the end of late antiquity (around AD 650).
Consider an historical area (Egypt, Near East, China, Greece, Rome) and choose an ancient period.
Then choose a personality or event (confirm your choice of topic with your teacher)
Formulate an historical question that you will investigate and address in essay form.
You are to develop an historical inquiry question which incorporates a key historical concept.
Locate and interrogate a range of sources (eg for their usefulness and reliability).
Select and organise relevant information.
Synthesise evidence from a range of sources to develop a hypothesis that you support with reasoned historical argument.
Write the first draft of your essay, checking you are:
using historical concepts and terms appropriately
examining the significance of the selected personality or event
presenting and communicating the findings of the historical investigation in an appropriate and well-structured written form.
Reflect on the draft and how well it addresses the question in a clear and concise way.
Complete and submit a final essay response (1000–words, including an appropriately formatted reference list.
Select one key source used in your investigation and complete a critique of the source (200–250 words). This may include:
the evidence provided by the source
an evaluation of how important the source was to your investigation.

You will use a process diary to keep track of your historical investigation.
