FIRE FIGHTING

The second most important municipal service is preventing and fighting fires.

The City of Moncton is not adequately supporting our fire fighters. We must improve our support. 

Our firefighters are outstanding professionals. They not only put their lives at risk fighting fires, they also often act as first responders in drug overdoses, accidents and health issues. 

I know this very well: four firefighters responded to my wife’s 911 call when the covid virus nearly killed me last December. I would not have survived without their attention until the paramedics arrived.

Our firefighters need more support from the city. At my suggestion, Council hired an expert to analyse our services and recommend measures to provide citizens and businesses the best fire prevention and fighting services. 

The report proposed 64 measures, including building a 6th fire station, hiring over 50 firefighters and other employees, and purchasing several vehicles, notably a Rapid Response Vehicle for responses to medical calls. Implementing all 64 measures will cost approximately 200 million dollars over 15 years.

I commit to implementing the 64 fire prevention and fighting measures as soon as we can.

In my opinion, every proposed measure is reasonable. That said, I will try my hardest to ensure their implementation while saving $20M to our taxpayers. I am confident that we can reduce the costs by 10%. I have succeeded in reducing the costs of several projects since 2008.
