Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 2 everyone. I hope everyone had a safe and restful time over the two weeks. And also welcome to the first edition of the new Bomaderry High School Newsletter. As I mentioned at the end of Term 1 we are attempting to provide greater communication through online platforms as well as showcasing the wonderful achievements of students and staff. If you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to provide us with feedback as we welcome the opportunity to continually improve the school newsletter.

The newsletter will be published every second Friday coinciding with our fortnightly formal assembly. These will be linked with each faculty in the school providing a snapshot of their engagement with students throughout the year. First up is the HSIE and Languages faculty who have showcased some of the various opportunities on offer in their subject areas.

Our ANZAC assembly last term was outstanding and I offer my thanks to Mrs Rogers, Ms Swain and our amazing SRC and Defence students for organising such a memorable occasion. Our thanks must also go to Mr Bill Smith from Bomaderry RSL Sub-Branch for his participation as a speaker at our assembly. We very much appreciate the ongoing support of the Bomaderry RSL Sub-Branch. The audience were extremely respectful and the students should be proud of their behaviour, marking the occasion with the respect it deserved. Well done everyone!

The inaugural School Steer Spectacular was held last term at Nowra Showground and Bomaderry High School students were well represented amongst the place getters. We were also very successful at the Milton component of the School Steer Spectacular culminating in the students taking out the Grand Champion School! Congratulations to all the students involved as well as Mr Manktelow for his organisation.

Our Deputy Principals’, Ms Parsons and Mr Graham are both on leave until Term 4. Mr Kelly will be replacing Ms Parsons and will continue to oversee Year 8 and Year 11. Mr Creighton will be relieving Head Teacher HSIE in place of Mr Kelly. Mr Flack will be replacing Mr Graham, again overseeing Year 9 and Year 12, with Mr Ford taking Mr Flack’s position as relieving Head Teacher Industrial Arts. Mrs Russell continues in her role as Deputy Principal overseeing Year 7 and Year 10.

The school has made the decision to proceed with a Third-Party provider for our administration software. This will be phased in across Term 2 and we will keep parents informed of how this is progressing. This will replace the Department of Education system that we moved to late last year. I thank you in advance once again for your patience and understanding as we make this transition in relation to our administrative software.

Have a great term everyone.

Mr I Morris

Deputy Principal's Report

The school utilises three Deputy Principals who, with the Principal, form the senior executive group that leads the school. One of those areas of leadership is the support and management of the wellbeing of students at the school. Students in Year 7 and Year 10 will be overseen by Mrs Cathy Russell, students in Year 8 and Year 11 by Mr John Kelly and students in Year 9 and Year 12 by Mr Stephen Flack.

When seeking assistance, students should first notify their classroom teacher who assesses the situation and refers students to other areas of support if necessary.

The school is in an exciting phase with all students in Year 7 through to Year 10 utilising an iPad in their learning. There are responsibilities associated with iPad use and students are expected to view their device as primarily a tool to assist them in their education. As such, apps that allow web access through VPN are strictly prohibited on the iPad when the students are at school. Parents are asked to be vigilant in ensuring that the iPad does not have these apps, or excess games which limit the storage capability for use at school. The students must also have iMessage switched off and notifications from social media switched off whilst they are at school.

Parents are also reminded that mobile phones are not allowed to be used whilst at school. If it is necessary to get a message to your child, please ring the school office on 44210699 and the office staff will ensure that your child receives the message. This way, students can focus on their learning and are not distracted from it whilst they are in the classroom.

With the colder weather creeping in, it is important to ensure that students remain in full school uniform with school jumpers and long pants. The uniform shop is open each Wednesday for parents who need to purchase school uniform for their child. In the interim, students will be given a jumper or other item of uniform from the uniform cupboard if they arrive at school out of school uniform.

Regards,

C Russell, J Kelly & S Flack
