We care about inclusive, safe and happy gaming spaces and as such we have a Code of Conduct which we expect all Club Members and guests to abide by.
This is applicable to games nights and events as well as the online space surrounding them e.g. Facebook page, WhatsApp, Board Game Geek and any other online or social media spaces.
While there is more detail below, our 'rules' can be summarised as:
We don't expect you to like everyone you met, but you can be polite and courteous. Â
Every person has an equal right to game and to enjoy Crystal Palace Board Games and Beyond Club events and spaces. This ranges from basics such as asking someone's name, giving someone time to learn a new game or think about their turn, to small considerations such as being aware of accessibility needs, which may not be apparent or checking if people wish physical contact before hugging.
Respect the Equality Act 2010 and other legal requirements of the UK.2
Please be aware that some people are new to gaming, or like to play different games than you. Consider if your behaviour could be interpreted as dismissive, intimidating, snobbish or off-putting to other attendees to the club. Everyone is welcome at Crystal Palace Board Gamers and Beyond, whatever their level of experience or commitment to gaming. Please let players learn at their own pace - remember today's new player who loves UNO could be looking to join Twilight Imperium in a few months..
Only offer advice if it is wanted or asked for. If in doubt please speak to a Host or a committee member if any issues arise.
Our venue is licensed to serve alcohol, but only to those over the age of 18 and only if they drink responsibly. Drinking is not synonymous with fun and people may choose not to drink for a variety of valid reasons personal to them. Alcohol is not an excuse for loud, aggressive or inappropriate behaviour. Our venue also serves a wide range of soft drinks along with a variety of tea and coffee.4
All games are owned by club members and are the personal responsibility of their owners. If damage to a board game should occur by personal irresponsible actions then it is the responsibility for the person who caused the damage to make amends up to and including replacements or other reparations. It is highly recommend that all open drinks are kept away from areas where spillages can occur.
We can all be guilty of unconscious actions - particularly those with neurodiversity traits. This can include such things as tapping pieces on the table, bending cards, picking at cardboard edges etc.. if you do this, please try other tools at your disposal to help with those behaviours.
Accidents do happen, so if you have a particularly prized/rare/expensive copy of a game then please don't bring it to the pub. Players who are particularly keen on such games often organise their own single session meet up at a 'safe' venue to enjoy the game. If you happen to accidentally damage a game, please at least apologise. Depending on the level of damage you can then discuss reparations with the owner.5
Crystal Palace Board Games and Beyond is open to all people, including family groups at some events. It is expected that all Members behave in a polite and family friendly manner at all times. Foul language will not be tolerated in the presence for those under the age of 16. There is zero tolerance for discrimination, sexist language or aggressive behaviour at any time - please report any instances to a member of the committee as soon as possible.
Crystal Palace Board Games and Beyond wants everyone to feel welcome regardless of their views, beliefs or political leanings. Therefore we (generally) avoid confrontational or divisive subjects such as religion and politics. This doesn't mean you can't have a face to face social discussion around these things, we live in the world and we are adults who can debate constructively. However, please be aware of everyone's comfort and change the subject if needed. Committee members will stop any conversation that is not constructive at events.  If you are uncomfortable in a conversation and wish support please ask a member of the committee. Â
Because 'tone' on posts on social media and online platforms can be so difficult to read, any posts that are overtly religious or political will be deleted by a member of the committee without warning. The committee member should message you directly to let you know why the post was removed. Repeated post of things that may be offensive may result in sanctions. If you are offended by a post, please let a member of the committee know as soon as possible.
A quiet conversation or private message with a member of the committee

Removal and/or Barring from the Crystal Palace Board Game and Beyond ;

Reporting of online comments to the social media provider which may result in a ban imposed by them

We recognise that everyone makes mistakes and that sometimes pointing them out can feel uncomfortable and challenging, which is why in the first instance we will always attempt (where appropriate) to respond with a quiet conversation or private message. We are all trying, and we all care about making Crystal Palace Board Games and Beyond an excellent community to be part of.
 Thank you for your support.
