This movie takes place in a dystopian future where there is a point system where other rate each other(from 1 to 5 stars). Having a high score is rewarded with benefits such as, express airlines, better housing options, and a better option of cars to rent.
The movie starts out with Lacie, the main character, trying to rent a new apartment. She cannot afford it, however she will get a discount if she has a higher score. She begins a journey for trying to increase her score from a 4.2 to a 4.5.
Lacie is presented with the opportunity to attend a wedding of a high score person, which will guarantee a raise in her score. Lacie must perform a speech at this wedding.
Instead of a raise in her score, she starts a downward journey and is unable to slow down her decent. It starts with an argument with her brother, then an accidental run-in to a person with coffee. These seem like common ocurrences that are inconveniences, but not worth losing social credit for. Her nosedive continues as she becomes frustrated at the airport. She is the docked an entire temporary point as she is thrown out of the airport.
Lacie meets a low score person, Susan. Susan has a low score because she experienced point discrimination, and was tired of the system. Susan is now a free spirited person, and the kindest character we meet in this movie.
Lacie is kicked from the attendance list when Naomi, the bride, find out that Lacie no longer has a 4. We find out that Naomi only wanted Lacie for her lower score as a lower score attendee would increase her score.
Lacie finally makes it to the wedding, ragged and muddy. She continues her speech in a delirious state, as she tries desperately to raise her score. She ends up picking up a knife as security is called.
Her score essentially reached the minimum, and is thrown in jail no questions asked.
