When the chapter downloads their monthly membership roster one of the things to be watching for is the data field (column head) labled "Email Unsubscribes." Many times this is unintended and the member really does want to receive valuable membership investing information from BetterInvesting and their host Chapter. When we see this we need to take action and make sure that is what the member intended to do. A friendly personal email from the chapter's membership point of contact to the person showing up on the unsubscribe list most times is all that is needed -- we've found almost every time the member didn't know what they were missing.

In August South Region sent out an email to all South Region BI members who were listed in the member file as being "email unsubscribed". The efficacy of this approach to getting our members to re-subscribe will be evaluated by checking their status in the October and November member files. A report will be made to the SR Board and BIVAB at a following meeting.

This spring the Georgia Chapter sent out 171 snail-mail letters to their chapter members who, for one reason or another showed up on the chapter's member file as being "unsubscribed." As a result of this campaign the July member files show that 72 members have updated their profile and are now back in communications with their supporting chapter. And we expect even more good news in future member file updates.

Currently, all new members are automatically subscribed to every list including the chapter email list (!! NOTE !! this will change in the future to an opt-in list where members must opt-in and are not automatically subscribed)

Then, over time, people become unsubscribed in 3 main ways – in order of frequency:

* Self clicking the ‘unsubscribe’ link on email content they no longer want to receive

* For some email providers cleaning out (deleting) items in the spam folder sends us a spam feedback report – we are obligated to unsubscribe based on those reports

Generally speaking, we are not surprised at chapter unsubscribe rates. Remember, no one asked to be added to this list. They did not opt-in and can only opt out by unsubscribing, calling or leaving the organization. Basically, over time, what is left on the list are engaged members who want to continue to hear from the chapter. In the future, when all lists become opt-in and confirmed we’ll see LESS people initially on the lists but also less unsubscribe activity.
