The virtual learning model is an extension of the classroom and includes the same high expectations for participation and assignments as the face to face model. BISD will be utilizing the Asynchronous Instructional model for virtual learning.
Asynchronous instruction refers to self-paced instruction with intermittent teacher interaction. There is pre-assigned work with formative assessments using the Learning Management System (LMS). Students may also watch pre-recorded videos of instruction with guided support. The LMS in Brownsboro ISD is Google Classroom and/or Edgenuity depending on the grade level.
Asynchronous student expectations include:
● Participating in a daily virtual meeting with the teacher if requested
● Showing proof of participation in daily virtual instruction by satisfactorily completing assignments to demonstrate evidence of student learning ie. video, picture, or activities submitted as lessons and/or completing assignments
● Communicating with the teacher when there is a need for additional assistance, tutoring, etc
● Designating a work space and work times at home
● Regular grading policy and grading rules apply to both virtual and face to face settings
Virtual Learning Attendance Guidelines
For students participating in asynchronous instructions, students must be engaged in one of the following ways for each enrolled class to receive attendance credit each day:
Daily progress in Google Classroom
Daily progress in teacher/student interactions via Google Meet
Completion/submission of assignments by the student
Pre-K-5th grade students will be required to be engaged in learning for a minimum of 3 hours daily (180 minutes)
6th-12th grade students will be required to be engaged in learning for a minimum of 4 hours daily (240 minutes)
*Per Texas Education Code (TEC) 25.092 students must attend 90% of a course in order to be awarded credit for the course and/or to be promoted to the next grade level.
Special Program Information
Special education students will receive instruction and related services in accordance with their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Virtual learners will receive services remotely rather than on campus when possible.
Related services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological services and/or vision services will be provided through digital platforms such as Google Meet. Some services may be provided through consultation rather than direct service.
Evaluations for special education eligibility will be guided on a case by case basis. Brownsboro ISD does encourage on-site evaluations when possible in order to preserve the accuracy and integrity of the evaluation but will be conducted remotely if a face to face evaluation is not possible.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's campus principal or Sandra Duke, Director of Special Education.
Technology Support
Students will be provided the following district technology device to use in the classroom and at home for virtual learning.
Pre-K-3rd: Ipad
4th-6th grade: Chromebook
7th-12th grade: Chromebook Flip
Park and Learn signs will be displayed around BISD campus and community partner locations to indicate areas where free wifi can be accessed.
Technology staff will be available to assist students. If students need technology assistance they can contact the media technology specialist on their campus or email a helpdesk ticket to: helpdesk@gobearsgo.net
Additional Information on Virtual Learning
Pre-K-6th grade students will receive instruction from a BISD teacher through Google Classroom and Google Meet
7th-12th grade students will mostly receive instruction through Edgenuity. Edgenuity is an online platform for learning through online videos provided by a certified teacher. Some classes will also have a Google Classroom.
BISD students participating in virtual instruction will be required to engage in learning activities on their own time during the school day on a daily basis. Teachers will post an assignment/activity each day and provide guided support. Students must attend 90% of the days a course is offered in order to receive credit for the course and/or to be promoted to the next grade. This requirement applies to both face to face and virtual instruction.
Students engaged in the virtual learning model will have limited course offerings and will not be able to participate in extracurricular and/or on campus activities.
