A South Node calculator takes your birth date, birth time and birthplace and returns the exact zodiac sign, degree and house of the descending lunar node in your natal chart. That point is where astrologers look for your default settings: the skills you picked up early, the reactions you fall back on when tired, and the territory that feels familiar even when it no longer serves you. The free South Node calculator gives you the placement in under a minute, and the rest of this guide explains how to read what it returns.
The South Node is not a planet. It is one of two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent yearly path. When the Moon passes from north of that plane to south of it, it crosses the descending node. The opposite crossing is the North Node, and the two always sit exactly 180 degrees apart. If your North Node is at 3° Taurus, your South Node is at 3° Scorpio, with no exceptions.
The nodes move backward through the zodiac and complete a full circuit in about 18.6 years, spending roughly eighteen months in each sign. That pace has two practical consequences. First, your sign is shared with everyone born in the same year and a half, so the degree and house carry most of the personal detail. Second, the node moves slowly enough that a birth time that is off by twenty minutes rarely changes the sign, though it can easily change the house.
The nodes also explain eclipses. A solar or lunar eclipse only happens when a New or Full Moon falls close to this axis, which is why eclipse seasons arrive roughly every six months and why astrologers link the nodes to turning points.
Type your birth date, your birth time as written on the certificate or hospital record, and the town or city where you were born. The tool converts your local time to Universal Time using the time zone and any daylight-saving rule in force on that date, so you do not need to adjust anything yourself.
Pick the house system you normally work with. Placidus is the common modern default; Whole Sign is popular with people who study older techniques. Your sign and degree will not change between systems. Only the house can.
The result lists the South Node's zodiac sign, its degree within that sign, its house, and its position on a chart wheel. Write all three down. The sign describes the style of the old pattern, the house names the area of life where it shows up most, and the degree tells you how close the node sits to a sign edge or a house cusp.
Where the tool lists aspects, note any planet within a few degrees of the South Node by conjunction, or of the North Node, which is the same as an opposition to the South. A planet sitting on the South Node often describes a talent that came early and is easy to lean on too hard.
Read the opposite sign and house straight away. The South Node only makes full sense as half of a pair, because the useful question is never "what is my old habit?" but "what am I being asked to add to it?"
If another site hands you a different degree, check three things before assuming anyone made an error.
The Astrology Geeks tool uses the true node, which follows the Moon's actual wobbling orbital crossing. Many apps use the mean node, which smooths that motion into an average. The two can sit up to about a degree and a half apart, and if your node is near 0° or 29° of a sign, they can disagree about the sign itself.
The calculator also works in the tropical zodiac, where 0° Aries is tied to the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses a sidereal zodiac and calls the South Node Ketu; a sidereal Ketu is usually about 24 degrees earlier, often a whole sign back. Neither result is wrong. They answer the question in different frameworks.
Finally, different house systems divide space differently, so a node at 2° past a Placidus cusp might sit in the previous house under Whole Sign.
Self-reliance is the reflex. You learned early that the quickest way to get something done was to do it alone, and you can still act before anyone else has finished the sentence. The growth edge, North Node in Libra, asks for consultation and shared decisions.
Comfort, routine and holding on to what you already have feel like safety. You are steady and good with tangible resources, but you can resist change long after a situation has gone stale. North Node in Scorpio asks you to let things be transformed.
You can talk your way around anything and you collect information easily. The trap is staying busy with facts and opinions instead of arriving at a conviction. North Node in Sagittarius points toward meaning and a chosen philosophy.
Caretaking, family loyalty and emotional protection come naturally, sometimes so naturally that you stay in the role of the one who looks after everyone. North Node in Capricorn asks you to build a public structure and claim authority.
You know how to shine, perform and be noticed, and you may have been praised for it young. The habit to watch is needing an audience to feel real. North Node in Aquarius asks you to put your energy into a group or cause.
Competence, fixing and analysis are second nature. You see what is wrong before anyone else does, and worry can follow. North Node in Pisces asks for trust, rest and a tolerance for things you cannot control.
You read other people well and keep the peace, often at the expense of your own preferences. North Node in Aries asks you to want something on your own account and say so.
Intensity, secrecy and crisis management feel familiar. You may expect betrayal before it arrives. North Node in Taurus asks for simple pleasures and a slower, steadier way of trusting.
You are quick to form big-picture views and may prefer the next horizon to the present conversation. North Node in Gemini asks you to listen, ask questions and pay attention to detail.
Responsibility arrived early. You are good at running things and holding a role, and you can confuse your title with your worth. North Node in Cancer asks you to let people in and tend to private life.
Detachment and group identity are comfortable. You can be the friend to everyone and close to no one. North Node in Leo asks you to be personally visible and take creative risks.
You absorb atmospheres, escape into imagination and rescue people who have not asked for it. North Node in Virgo asks for boundaries, daily routine and practical service.
This example uses a hypothetical person, but the positions are real. I computed them with the PyEphem library for a birth on 22 August 1991 at 6:40 a.m. BST in Manchester, England, using the true node and Placidus houses. Your own calculator readout may differ by a minute or two of arc.
Sun: 28°39' Leo, 12th house, just above the horizon
Ascendant: 4°30' Virgo
True North Node: 18°29' Capricorn, 5th house
South Node: 18°29' Cancer, 11th house
The South Node in Cancer says the person's familiar mode is protective and emotionally attuned. The 11th house places that pattern among friends and groups, so the picture is someone who becomes the caretaker of their social circle: remembering birthdays, absorbing other people's moods, holding the friend group together. The North Node in Capricorn in the 5th house adds a clear direction. Growth comes from making something of their own and putting their name on it, a creative project or a disciplined hobby, rather than giving all their energy to the group. The Moon rules Cancer, so the next step would be to look at the natal Moon, which here sits at 23°40' Capricorn in the 5th house, right beside the North Node. That is a strong hint that the person's emotional needs are tied to the same self-directed creative work.
Reading the South Node as something bad. It describes skills you already own. The problem is over-reliance, not the skill.
Ignoring the house. Two people with the same sign but different houses can live their pattern in very different settings.
Trusting a guessed birth time for the house. The sign is stable; the house needs a recorded time.
Reading it without the North Node. Half an axis is half a story.
Treating past-life language as fact. Karmic readings belong to a spiritual tradition. The chart itself only gives you a position.
Mixing tropical and sidereal results. Compare a tropical South Node with tropical sources only.
For the sign, not usually, because the node changes sign only about every eighteen months. For the house you do, because houses depend on the exact moment and place of birth.
It is the same astronomical point. Ketu is the Vedic name, and Vedic astrology places it in the sidereal zodiac, so the sign often differs from a tropical result.
Because both are crossings of one orbital line. The Moon crosses the ecliptic at two points on opposite sides of the Earth, so the nodes are always 180 degrees apart.
The nodes move backward on average, so most charts show them retrograde. The true node occasionally appears direct for short spells, which does not change the reading.
Every 18.6 years the transiting nodes come back to their natal positions, around ages 18-19, 37, 56 and 74. Many people notice a review of old habits at those ages.
The calculator does the astronomy. The reading is your job: compare the sign, house and North Node with how you actually live, and see where the old habit could use some company. Run the calculation, note the opposite placement, and use the Astrology Geeks library to read the related placements, especially your Moon and the ruler of your South Node sign.
