A North Node return, also called a nodal return, is the moment the transiting North Node comes back to the sign and degree it held when you were born. The lunar nodes take about 18.6 years to travel backward through all twelve signs, so returns fall near ages 18 to 19, 37, 55 to 56 and 74. Astrologers traditionally treat these as checkpoints for direction: times when the growth themes of your natal North Node feel more pressing. Nothing in that tradition predicts a specific event, and the ages are windows rather than appointments.
This guide focuses on the calculator side: how to find your natal North Node, how to work out when the transiting node reaches it, and how to read the window when it arrives. It also covers the related "reverse" return around ages 9, 28, 46 and 65.
The North Node is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic heading north. That crossing point drifts slowly backward through the zodiac, completing one circuit in roughly 18.6 years. A quick check with the standard mean-node formula from Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms gives a period of about 18.61 years.
That timing produces two kinds of milestone:
Nodal return: the transiting North Node conjoins your natal North Node, at about 18.6, 37.2, 55.8 and 74.4 years of age.
Reverse nodal return: the transiting North Node conjoins your natal South Node, halfway through each cycle, at about 9.3, 27.9, 46.5 and 65.1.
Your own dates will vary by a few months either side of these averages, partly because the True Node wobbles around its average path.
The North Node sign calculator asks for your birth date, birth time and birthplace. It converts your local time to UTC from the location and reads the True North Node's tropical position from Swiss Ephemeris data.
For return work, the most important outputs are:
your natal North Node sign and degree, which is the target the transiting node returns to;
the house, which traditional astrology uses to show the life area the return highlights;
aspects to the node, which add the other planets involved in the theme;
the opposite South Node sign and house, which is the target for the reverse return.
The calculator reports your natal position. It does not list return dates, so you work those out from your natal degree and the node's current position.
Run the North Node sign calculator and write down your natal North Node sign and degree.
Add 18.6 years to your birth date to get the approximate first return. Add 37.2 and 55.8 years for the next two.
Check where the node is now. By the mean-node calculation, the North Node moved from Pisces into Aquarius in August 2026 and stays there until about March 2028. True-node dates differ slightly, so confirm with an ephemeris for exact timing.
When the transiting node is in your natal North Node sign, you are in the broad return window. When it is within a degree or two of your natal degree, you are close to the exact return.
Note that the node moves backward, so it reaches the late degrees of a sign first and the early degrees last.
For the reverse return, repeat the process with your South Node sign and degree.
Because the node spends about eighteen months in each sign, the people having a sign-level return right now are those born when the node was last in Aquarius. Using the mean-node formula, those earlier Aquarius periods ran roughly from early 2008 to mid-2009, from mid-1989 to late 1990, and from late 1970 to spring 1972. People born in those windows are in their first, second or third return window between August 2026 and early 2028.
These boundaries are approximate. If you were born near the start or end of one of those periods, your node could be in Pisces or Capricorn instead, so run the calculator rather than relying on the year.
Traditional interpretation reads a nodal return through three layers.
The sign of your natal North Node. This sets the growth theme. A Leo North Node return might be read as a renewed push toward creative visibility; a Virgo North Node return as a renewed focus on skill and practical service.
The house. This shows where the theme lands. A return to a 4th house North Node points toward home and family; to a 10th house node, toward vocation and public life. The house needs a reliable birth time.
The life stage. The same theme can feel very different at 18, 37 and 56. Around 18 or 19, many people are leaving school, home or both, and a return may coincide with choices about study or work. Around 37, astrologers often describe a review of commitments made in one's twenties. Around 56, the tradition leans toward consolidation and what one wants to pass on. These are common readings, not rules.
The reverse return is easy to overlook, but it gives the cycle a useful midpoint. About nine years after each return, the transiting North Node reaches your natal South Node, and the transiting South Node sits on your natal North Node. Traditional readings often describe this as a time when familiar habits and skills, the South Node side of the axis, come up for review.
You can use it practically. When you note your return window, also note the reverse window about 9.3 years later. If you journal or keep chart notes, write a short entry at each one: what the North Node theme looked like in your life at that point, and which South Node habits you were relying on most. Over two or three cycles, those notes become a personal record that is far more informative than any general description of the return. They also let you test the tradition against your own experience rather than taking it on trust, which suits a calculation-first approach to astrology.

Nadia was born in March 1990. The calculator places her natal True North Node at 14 degrees Aquarius in the 7th house, with the South Node at 14 degrees Leo in the 1st.
Working out her window:
1990 plus 37.2 years puts her second return around mid-2027.
The mean node is in Aquarius from August 2026 to about March 2028, so her broad window is open now.
Because the node moves backward, it reaches 14 degrees Aquarius after passing through the late degrees of the sign. She notes mid-2027 as the likely exact period and plans to check the true-node date in an ephemeris.
Reading it:
Sign: an Aquarius North Node is traditionally linked with moving from personal recognition toward contribution to a group or community.
House: the 7th house places that theme in close partnerships and agreements.
Life stage: at 37, the tradition suggests reviewing the commitments she made in her late twenties.
Her practical question for the window becomes: "In my partnerships, both personal and professional, am I making room for shared goals, or mostly seeking to be seen?" That is a reflective prompt, not a forecast, and it gives her something concrete to think about over the months of the return.
Expecting a single dramatic day. The theme is usually read across months, not on the exact date.
Using only the birth year. Someone born near a sign change may not have the sign you expect. Calculate rather than assume.
Forgetting the node moves backward. The late degrees of a sign come first.
Mixing node types. True-node and mean-node return dates can differ by weeks. Pick one method and use it consistently.
Treating it as a prediction. Tradition frames the return as a checkpoint for direction, not an event generator.
Approximately 18.6, 37.2, 55.8 and 74.4. Your exact dates can be a few months either side of those ages.
Astrologers traditionally read it as a time when the growth themes of your natal North Node come into focus. What it means in practice depends on your chart and life.
The node takes about eighteen months to cross a sign, so the broad window is long. The exact return to your natal degree is a narrower period of a few weeks to months.
When the transiting North Node conjoins your natal South Node, around ages 9, 28, 46 and 65. Tradition often reads it as a time to review familiar patterns.
The North Node calculator gives your natal position. Combine that with the node's current position from an ephemeris to find your return window.
A North Node return is one of the easier cycles to work out once you know your natal node. Calculate the sign and degree, add 18.6-year steps, check where the node is now, and read the window through sign, house and life stage. Treat the return as a checkpoint for reflection.
